Bayern’s Biggest Wins – Ranking Bayern Munich’s Highest Scoring Victories

Bayern Munich have dominated German football for many years, winning the Bundesliga title 19 times in the 21st century alone. They have triumphed 34 occasions in all, finishing second a further 10 times, with FC Nurnberg the second most successful side in German football with their nine titles, although their last triumph came back in 1968.

Given Bayern’s dominance, plus the fact that, especially in more recent years, the German top tier lacks the strength in depth of, say, the Premier League, it is no surprise that they have racked up some big wins over the years. Mismatches are not uncommon in German football, be that in the league, or in the DFB-Pokal (German Cup).

Recently the Bavarian giants made history by recording the biggest win in the history of the FIFA Club World Cup. They battered Kiwi part-timers Auckland City 10-0 and it could easily have been more. They mustered 17 shots on target and 31 in total, whilst the New Zealanders had just a single shot, from outside the area. The clash in Cincinnati always looked like a mismatch and clashes such as this one do the competition, which has been heavily criticised and poorly attended, no favours at all.

However, the six-time European champions are so powerful that it is not just against such minnows as Auckland that they can record big wins. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest thrashings they have handed out over the years.

Bayern Munich’s Biggest Ever Competitive Win

Ignoring results in friendly games and testimonials, the biggest victory ever recorded by FC Hollywood is the 16-1 thumping they gave DJK Waldberg in the domestic cup in the 1997/98 season. Waldberg is little more than a village and their football team has generally played in the German lower leagues, often at amateur level.

They have spent much of their history, since being formed in 1953, hovering around in the seventh tier, though has been as high as the fifth and as low as the 10th. Only once have they made it as far as the first round of the DFB-Pokal but what a draw they got.

No doubt they would have loved an away game against Bayern but a home draw was the next-best thing. And so it was that on the 15th of August 1997, they welcomed one of the biggest football teams on the planet. Any dreams of an upset were soon extinguished, with Bayern scoring twice inside the first 13 minutes.

But then something rather miraculous happened. The hosts scored. Centre forward Peter Haase made it 2-1 with a header and, after 16 minutes the minnows were, somehow, back in the game and maybe, just maybe, daring to dream. The dream lasted until the 18th minute when Giovane Elber got his second to make it 3-1 and then completed his hat-trick after just 22 minutes.

German giant Carsten Jancker improved his scoring stats for the season by bagging five after that as the away team ran riot. He only got 79 goals for Bayern from 225 appearances, netting more than 6% of his goals between the 32nd and 47th minutes of this match! Even Dietmar Hamman got on the scoresheet – twice!

In the end the visitors eased down, either consciously or subconsciously taking a little pity on the clearly outclassed hosts. It was 16-1 after 74 minutes and so it would end, though this remains enough to be their biggest win some 27+ years on. Bayern, managed at that time by Italian legend Giovanni Trapattoni, went on to win the cup too, so at least poor Waldberg can say they were beaten by the champions.

How About 27-0?

Much more recently Bayern did put a whopping 27 goals past a side, without reply, but this was in a pre-season friendly. This incredible scoreline was recorded against Rottach-Egern, which is around an hour south of Munich by car. Back in 2019 the two sides had met and the Bundesliga giants won 23-0 but this time the minnows would not get off so lightly. 13 different players found the back of the net, with three – Marcel Sabitzer, Jamal Musiala and Mathys Tel – getting five apiece. Serge Gnabry had no chance of claiming the match ball with a mere hat-trick.

This clash took place on the 18th of July 2023 and just a week or so later Bayern signed Harry Kane. They must have been disappointed by the second-half performance against Rottach-Egern when they only added a meagre nine goals to the 18 they bagged in the first 45 minutes.

Double Figures a Regular Occurrence for Bayern?

Fans of many clubs are happy just to see their side score. In the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Leicester City failed to find the net in 17 of their 38 Premier League games and certainly for most decent teams, scoring twice has to count as a solid day at the office. Not so much for Bayern.

Prior to the beating they handed out to Auckland City, we only have to go back to 2021 for the last time they brought up double figures in a competitive clash. They won 12-0 against another lower-league outfit, Bremer SV, again in the German Cup. In 1983 they brought up double figures in the UEFA Cup too, beating Anorthosis Famagusta (from Cyprus) 10-0 in the first round, in Munich. But they can even boast a win of similar proportions in the league.

Their biggest Bundesliga victory was some years ago now, back in 1971. On the 27th of November one of the great Bayern sides of all time thumped Borussia Dortmund 11-1. The scoreboard inside the ground wasn’t even equipped to handle such a score as the manual system only had two number ones. Thus, when the game went 10-1, a seven was repurposed and used!

Gerd Muller, Franz Beckenbauer and Uli Hoeneß were among the Bayern scorers that day, and the club would go on to win the league title for three years in a row from 1971/72 onwards. They also completed a hat-trick of European Cups from 1973/74 onwards, so perhaps Dortmund shouldn’t feel quite so bad about their terrible loss.

Plenty of Big European Wins Too

Thumping part-timers is one thing, but beating teams with ease in the Champions League is a different matter entirely. That said, Bayern have recorded some huge wins in the Champions League (modern era, excluding the European Cup) too.

Their biggest win in the UCL saw them put nine past Dinamo Zagreb in a 9-2 win in September 2024. Harry Kane scored four that day, including three penalties! They also beat Basel 7-0 in 2011/12 and have managed that same scoreline against Shakhtar Donetsk too. However, perhaps their most memorable victory in the Champions League saw them stun Barcelona 8-2 in 2020!
